As most people already know inhaling asbestos can be extremely detrimental to your health and is known to cause debilitating health problems such as Mesothelioma and Asbestosis. Due to this, over the years there have been millions of asbestos compensation claims made.  However numerous studies conducted in the last few years have proven that Industrial workers who have been exposed to Asbestos are significantly more likely to develop heart problems or be more prone to have a stroke.

A study of 100,000 asbestos workers released by the British Medical Journal in April of 2012 showed that Men are 69% more likely to die of a stroke and 39% more likely to die from heart disease. Women, however, are 100% and 89% more likely to die from the respective issues. The study also showed that increased exposure to asbestos further increases the risk of developing these health problems.

Asbestos causes heart disease by killing cells within the body. Dead cells are not able to grow and therefore form a tumour, however when Asbestos fibres kill a cell it does so by inducing a process called ‘Programmed cell necrosis’ this leads to the release of a molecule called HMGB1 (High-mobility group box 1 protein). HMGB1 acts as an inflammatory and inflammation of the organs, which plays a role in Cardiovascular disease.

Asbestos is extremely widespread with an immeasurable amount of ways to come into contact with it, but the majority of men that are exposed to asbestos worked within the building industry and women working within manufacturing. Cases of housewife’s and even children developing health problems due to exposure from asbestos fibres are not unheard of. This is because inhaling even a single fibre of asbestos has the potential to develop into a serious health issue.

Being exposed to Asbestos does not always lead to a critical health condition although certain steps should be taken to reduce any potential risk.

You should:

Eliminate your current and future exposure to asbestos.

Inform your doctor of any previous or possible exposure you have had to Asbestos.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle with exercise and an appropriate diet.

Some common misconceptions about Asbestos include but are not limited to:

Asbestos is banned.

This is not true, although regulations regarding the use of asbestos have been amended in keeping with legislation. There are still over 3000 products containing asbestos some of which can be purchased from your local hardware stores such as roofing shingles, drywall and gaskets.

Mesothelioma only affects the elderly.

Although it is extremely rare for people below the age of 50 to be diagnosed with mesothelioma there are several cases in which young people have developed the illness. An example of this would be a 13year old girl who used to walk past an asbestos factory on her way to school.

Only people working with asbestos are at risk.

Because of the nature of asbestos, inhaling even a single fibre can be potentially life threatening. It is not uncommon for women to be diagnosed with an asbestos related illness as a result of washing the overalls of someone who has worked with asbestos fibres.

There is only 1 kind of asbestos.

In general, people talk about asbestos as one product but in truth, there are 6 different silicate minerals. Although the types of minerals have similar qualities such as being highly resistant to flames and chemicals they generally differ in toxicity.
